Do not get a Mountaineer! They're just like the Ford Explorer with Firestone tires
Yeah, they are CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!
l would instead suggest a Mercedes-Benz 4matic wagon, Volvo V70, Audi Allroad or A6 Avant, or even a new Kia Rondo or Mazda 5
If you do not need 7-passenger seating, I'd go with a Subaru Outback Sport, Suzuki Aerio, or Mazda Protege5, or Mazda 6 wagon

Not a bad vehicle (Ford Exploerer clone-the best selling SUV of all time- l am an Explorer owner & have worked in the service dept of both Ford dealers & Mercury dealers.)All vehicles have some problems but in my experience-GREAT vehicles overall. Are there some imports that do a better/more efficient job.I'd have to say sure.To u (& the guy that put a Hundai in the same classification).. l think only an idiot would even compare the two.If you're keeping it forever, get a Mountaineer (not great resale value-look up one 2 years older than what u want). If you're not sure & may consider trading/selling in a couple of years-check out either Toyota Highlander or 4-Runner.Sure the 4-Runner is more expensive but it holds it is resale value so well u will loose less money on depriciation compared to the Mountaineer.Good luck on ur decision.

l recently retired from a job where l drove around 35,000 miles per year. My last 2 vehicles were Mountaineers. l put over 150,000 miles on each of these vehicles. l performed my own maintanance such as oil, brakes, etc. l drove these vehicles hard but took good care of them & never had any problems with either of them. Zero problems with engines or transmissions or A/C. l replaced wiper blades, brakes, & belts once on each vehicle. The 4.6 V8 delivers around 20-21 mpg on the highway & just under 15 mpg in town driving. The vehicle handles just fine if u know how to drive. l ran Michelin & Goodyear tires. Goodyears r a bit softer on the ride but the Michilins handle better. Either is a good choice.
