If Mercury is the 2nd most reliable brand, according to J.D. Power, why is it not selling well

Ford plans to stop Mercury from manufacturing cars in 2012.
Mercury actually has one of the top 5 spots in reliability on the Consumer Reports list.

l highly doubt a Mercury is that reliable. Either way their imagine is rather bad, Ford made, luxury pricing, and bland styling.

not enough advertising

Not enough advertising and not enough products. They only have like 4 or 5 different models.

Ford keeps denying that it will stop producing Mercury, but Ford is mid-range brand is currently selling in fewer numbers than Oldsmobile or Plymouth before they went on the chopping block.

It is been decades since the brand had a clear identity. Managers have vacillated between pushing it as a cheap Lincoln and an upscale Ford, and an attempt to extend the Cougar name 30 years ago merely ruined it for a ponycar revival.

One of the reasons Mercury & Lincoln r more highly-rated than Fords, despite being basically the same cars, is that more elderly people buy them...and elderly people simply r not as picky as the unwashed masses who buy Fords.

They certainly r not made any better...but l should mention that Fords in general r MUCH better than they were just 10 years ago, & actually r starting to rival Toyota in quality.

Check the reliability rankings besides JD Powers, & u will find this out for yourself.

When the only super reliable car Mercury makes is the Grand Marquis and they are trying to phase it out, that kills sales.

Most of the other offerings from Mercury are rather new or recently redesigned, which does help ratings a bit. Until that stuff ages and starts breaking down.

l have been a huge fan of Mercury for years & finally bought my first new car ever in 2002, a Grand Marquis & l love the car. No repairs since 2002 except oil change & l love the style & horsepower along with 26 hwy miles. It is a true American car which l love to see on the road instead of all the small overrated imports. When u read these JD Power results u can see that the top car is only a few points off from the last car in most cases & its a shamed we rate our own cars on this so much when they r just as good as the rest.

The one thing that does drive me crazy about Ford is their advertising, it sucks most of the time & they ignore the buyer way to much. l also own a 2002 Explorer that gets about 24 mpg on the hwy that is about to have 90,000 & this one also has just had regular maintenance & still runs & looks great.

BUY American & support ur own economy & make the dollar stronger & the prices will come down.

When Consumer Reports performs their ''quality'' tests, they factor in things like 'build-quality' & 'styling' which r subjective, & not based on measurable factors; it is the opinions of their people that get added into factual information. J.D. Power quality reports r based on measurable factors, such as parts that have needed to be replaced. So people who have bought Japanese cars r going to use Consumer Reports surveys instead of admitting that Mercury builds better cars: l guess they can not swallow their pride of foreign companies & be proud of something Americans have built.

First of all, they're not going to stop building Mercurys. They r changing the line up a little.
As far as selling well, the Milan, Mariner & Sable sell very well. Unfortunately our consumers dont always look at all the facts when buying. If they did they would realize that a Milan is a better buy than an Accord or Camry or a Mariner is way nicer than a RAV4 or CRV. Somehow our consumers love to send their hard earned $$$ to Japan r are quite proud of it, when in fact a domestic manufacturer builds a better product!
As far as the JD power report, it is an indication of the truth as it is based on consumer surveys.
