Is there a difference between shocks and struts? If so or if not, I have a 00' Mountaineer, what do I have?

Actually your vehicle has shocks front and rear whether its 2 or 4 wheel drive.

No struts on your mountaineer,Just factory shocks , hope this helps.

Struts r & shocks r both dampeners to stop the rebound of the spring is action in the suspension. Without them the spring would continue to ''bounce back & fourth until all of the energy is dissipated.

However, a strut is usually an integral part of a lager assembly with the spring which makes up the suspension support. In other words, the spring & strut r removed in one piece. A shock on the other hand is merely an independent piece in the suspension which typically can be removed without having to remove the spring.
