l need a new engine for my Cougar and l found one but the seller needs my engine tag so the engine will be specific with the other components of my Cougar.

l have talked with a Mercury Dealer and they did not know where to find it. l spoke with different garages l took it into and they did not know anything about an engine tag.

Is there a website l can input my VIN # and pull up my engine tag?

Or another dealer or # to call to find it? Or even somewhere on my car?

Thanks.

the person selling the motor is probably looking to see if u have a return fuel system or a returnless system. this depends on ur cougar is ''birth date''. look at ur driverside door panel & it should give u that date. other than the return vs. returnless fuel system for this motor there r no true differences in the v6 versions that were placed in these cars (which l am assuming u have) until they changed the displacement in '01 (i believe that is the correct year). if u have the 4 cyl it is the same motor that came in the focus of that year also & unfortunately l own a v6 cougar & do not know much about the 4-banger. the v6 is the same motor as the contour or the mystique, the duratec. realistically if u r getting a motor out of any cougar 99 & up u will be fine. this is a quote from newcougar.org forum explaining this: Basicly what they r asking is to make sure the 2 fuel rails r the same. You can confirm this by asking the build date of the other motor & compare to yours.
If before may 1999 u have return style fuel rail (2 lines going to ur fuel rail)

If after may 1999 u have a returnless (1line)

If u dont mind the work, u can take any engine (return or returnless) & just swap out the LIM from one engine to the other to make it work.

by the way if the guys at the merc dealer could not tell u this l sure would not be taking anything l own to them for any type of work.
