You do not see a whole lot of them on the roads now. But I've always dug their body design and the power of the engine. It seems reasonably priced too. I've liked em for a while now. Do you think they're a bit underrated?

l have never felt one way or the other about Mercury cars, they're just sort of there, nothing special. But they are pretty good and reliable, just blah.

l have a 1997 mercury cougar XR7 anniversary edition. its a beautiful car with its stock pearl white paint job & the leather interior. l love the body style, plus its not considered a sports car by insurance companies. the engine r good with gas & the power is ok. the cougar has 3 engine sizes. a 3.8 liter V6 which l have with 145 horsepower, a 4.6 liter V8 with 210 horsepower l believe, & a supercharged V6 & l cant remember how much they have. the only thing that sucks is the cost of repair can be expensive. so as long as u take car of it & get the scheduled maintenance done than itll take great car of you. also there r a couple of aftermarket performance parts out there for the cougar. l think these cars would make a great sleeper.

Are u talking the Cougars from around 2000?
They r some of the crappiest cars Ford ever made. Underneath the sheetmetal, they r Contours. Those have my vote for the worst cars ever made by Ford.
That model Cougar is total crap, expensive to fix, & the Ford shops hate working on them.

Now, if you're talking the early-to-mid-90 is models, different story.they were okay, but it is hard to find one in good shape, & hard to find parts for them now.

To me the best Cougar and only real Cougars are from 1967-1973. The best being 67-70. Loads of horsepower and true styling.

If its the 99-02 cougar your talking about its a pretty decent car that looks cool and handles well but the engine is 170hp can not back up its sporty look and it also has a sluggish 0-60 time of about 8 sec.

l LOVE mercury cars... l drove a 97 Grand Marquis for about 2 years while l was in college. Mercurys are very dependable cars. When l stopped driving mine, it had 135,000 miles on it and still in MINT condition. l thought about getting a Cougar, but l am not to crazy about the body style, so l went for a Mitsubishi Eclipse instead :-) Overall, l think it is a good choice though.
