Ok, l just bought a 1996 Mercury sable and it has a keyless entry on the driver side door.l am not sure of the code and when l went to Ford they are asking $60 of which l do not have.is the code listed somewhere on the car and if it is, where can l find it?

Get a flashlight & small mirror (compact or ''dental''
Move drivers is seat all the way back & recline it
Stand on ur head under steering wheel
Beginnng at accelerator pedal linkage look toward where steering wheel shaft goes to firewall
Between accelerator linkage & steering shaft is a metal & plastic box attached to wiring harness. Put mirror behind the (accelerator side if l remember right) & shine light on it. (if u wear bifocals even more fun)
You should see a five digit code.

l agree forsure there has to be a code that they use to co-ordinate the cars assembly process. Plus manufactures always use a numbering and letterring system.

it is not in the car , l believe the only a dealer can get the number , Or Maybe a Locksmith could get it
