We had a 95 mercury sable for 10 years. No major mechanical problems. Very trustworthy. Lots of rust problems on the body - we live in the Midwest so lots of salt on the roads in the winter.

indeed you have a good vehicle, l have owned fords/mercury is for 20 some years, l would say you made a good choice, the engine is fairly easy to tune up, and they run forever, all car makes have their problems but in the last 20 years since ive had fords only the hood stays down longer ( less maintenance ) from mechanically inferior autos

My boyfriend bought a 98' Sable and on the way home from the dealership it broke down. The engine block cracked before the heat sensor ever went off. He got a new engine and it is worked ever since with no problems other than a leaking Radiator. Hope that helps. It is a good car and it is been running great.
