My car was supplied with new spark plugs and an oil change after my car got flooded with gas from the previous cold last week. Well yesterday l was at a stop light and waiting for it to turn red and my car kept on feeling like it wanted to die, it has never done this before. l had my alternator checked, fine, l had my starter checked, fine, l had my battery and everything else tha thas to do with the electrical system checked, all fine. This summer l had my engine compression checked and that is fine to, the transmission is in good running order as well, only problem is that l need a new power steering pump and something with the emissions valve (the engine light is on for that). What could be causing this problem? My car does not actually stall it just feels like it is going too. Only seriousplease.

My Volvo used to do something similar. l do not know if the cars are similar enough, but the tune-up involved increasing the RPM is of my engine at idle speed. Someone who knows more (or your mechanic) would be able to tell you exactly what that entails.

l am sure you have high miles l worked at ford dealers ,the most common thing l found was the throttle plate had build up.remove the intake bellow ,spray carburetor cleaner in the throttle housing and clean with a old tooth brush.reinstall bellow.the vechile may run a little rough at first but just let idle for about 5 minutes.

This car most likely has the v6 3.0L The Idle Air control Valve can be dirty & needs to be cleaned or replaced about $50 part. This will cause the car to idle funny when coming to a stop like its going to die.
l had a 1995 Taurus with 3.0L v6 same engine with that problem.

This part is easy that anyone can replace it. All u got to do is have someone show u the part. It will be held on by two 10mm bolts & there will be a gasket that needs removed below it & there is a wire connector that needs disconnected to it. The new part will have a new gasket & make sure u use it.

This is the part with the picture of a IAC Valve & yours will look the same.

As for the emissions problem this might cause a Check engine light & says its running too lean. There is too much oxygen since this part can cause a vacuum leak like condition.

But a lot of 1996 fords l worked on all have had bad cat converters & that turns on the engine light. $500 up to fix.
