try putting your foot on the brake pedal real firm, and if that does not work make sure the car is not parked in a bind or on a slight hill, sometimes that will cause this, you may have to pull kind of hard on the shifter, you may also have a bad brake light switch on it,it has electric interlock system on it,and the light switch has to work for this function to work well, good luck.

l presume you put your foot on the pedal and then tryed the shifter. Look at your tyranny dip stick to see if you have enough fluid in the tyranny. If you do not fill it to its proper level. Then check to see if you can get it out of park.

It is probably the brake interlock switch.
Most cars made in 2000 had the switch.
It required that u had to be stepping on the brake before u could move the lever out of park.
If this used to work, but does not now, the switch is bad.
Look under the steering column & find the TWO swiches that r activated by the pedal arm.
Have someone watch the brake lights, & press on just one of the switches' button with ur finger or a screwdriver. If the brake lights come on, it is the OTHER switch that locks ur shift lever.
You should replace it if it is bad, but until then, connect the two wires together to get the lever to move until u can get the new switch. (It is under $10 at the dealer)

Fix the brake lights, there a small cover near the shift on the right, remove the ''o'' ring cover and push down on the pin and it will get out of park.

movie cutter kind of had the right idea but wrong area.

If all brake lights work, (make sure they work as that is the signal to release the interlock)

It is usually the solenoid itself inside the shifter jammed up. to get it to a dealer, pop the little cover on the right side of the shift handle (that round little thing) & shove a long hard rod that will fit in the hole downward. it should shove a lock forward allowing u to put the car in neutral to start the car. jsut remember, no parking until at the dealer as u will have to do this again everytime to get it out of park

Make sure your brake lights work and also check your fuses. My friend had the same problem, it was a blown fuse for the brake lights. Its a safety feature so you cant drive around with no tail lights.
