Looking at buying a 1996 Grand Marquis. It was owned by an older gentlemen who has known my father for many years. It is in prestine condition and has only 90k miles. Are these vehicles known to run for a long time or do they tend to have problems?

they do tend to be very reliable and with proper care can run for a very long time. as with any car maker ford have their issues one issues that seems to happen with fords is oil pump failure

l think their repair record is considered above average by Consumer Reports (but my issue only goes back to 1998).

Main thing is to take proper care of things - oil changes, tire pressure, plugs, etc. You should get another 100K out of it without too much hassle. All vehicles have minor problems - battery should be replaced soon if it is the original; alternators shocks, and starters wear out. But in the scheme of things, these are minor repairs.

Buy It! Buy It! Buy It! The Mercury Grand Marquis is the sibling to the Ford Crown Victoria which is designed to be thrashed daily by police & taxi personnel & still go 200k. These cars r called the Panther Platform & they pretty much run the US. In New York City l believe there r close to 7,000 of these that r taxi cabs. l am Auto Consultant & this is one of my top 5 cars that l put my customers in. Its stone reliable, super safe, powerful, & looks awesome. l do not know how much u r looking at spending but u can expect to pay around $13k for an almost new 2005 Crown Victoria with 5-10k on it. l personally have owned a 97' with 60-80k on it & all l did was replace one starter $100 (Big Deal). l usually get these cars 5-7k below book so depending on how much this is it may be a really good buy maybe not; either way it will be an awesome car for you!!!

Excellent ride. They're the upper class to the Crown Vic. (hard driven police cars). Maintain it and it should go 200k with minimal problems.

This car is the best Ford has to offer.
It is rear wheel drive, so if anything happens, cheaper to repair, also good highway fuel milage

Hi, these cars can run into the 300k mile range if properly maintained!

This is why you see many being used as taxis. Also, the cousin car; the Ford Crown vics. are police cars with the same motors/etc.

I'd say go for this one!

They are excellent vehicles. They run for ages and are also very safe. You wo not be disappointed when you get your hands on one.

l agree with the others, l work on these vehicles in a normal course of business, & other than minor issues with the power windows & missing, pretty much these things can be like the energizer bunny.. keep going & going..

As well as what someone said, most police use crown vics till they hit 100-150k miles . which would equal about 300k miles of hourly use on the engines.. they sell them & people still put another 100k on them.. They r pretty good motors & I'd say if u like the car, run with it.

had a 94 Crown vic traded in with 367k miles, no major repairs, even the AC still was on its orignial charge! also had a 97 Town car with same everything, traded in with 358k. also no major problems with it. on my third panther car with 90 k miles, and l dont hesitate to drive it anywhere. l just took it on a 3k road trip in 4 days, and no problems what so ever.

Yeah you will love it , The maintenance is not that bad and easy to fix hopefully yours will last for a long time , The only ones l have ever seen in the scrap yard is the ones that are worn out or wrecked, hope this helps.
