What is the standard engine on a 1971-72 Mercury Marquis? Is it the 351ci V8, 400ci V8 or the 429ci V8 motor?

most likely 390 how ever more than one size was accommodated for in most all ford products

l do not believe the the 351M aka 400 was built yet. l would say the 351W, the 390FE Engine or the 429 could have possibly been good canidates. As far as the standard engine l would have to go with the 351W.

These were known as the ''Continental Styling'' years, as Mercury was trying to market itself as an affordable Lincoln, rather than a more expensive Ford. A 1969 advertisement for the Colony Park wagon bills the car as ''If Lincoln Continental made a station wagon, this would be it.''

This generation of Marquis was available as a full line of cars, with two- & four-door hardtops, a convertible, & a station wagon. The new 1969 Mercury Marauder was based off of the two-door Marquis. Marquis models came standard with a 429 in³ V8 with a two-barrel carburetor. The four-barrel 429 from the Marauder was optional. The three-speed C6 automatic was still the sole transmission.

This generation introduced the hidden headlights that were a Lincoln-Mercury trademark in the 1970s & also introduced rear fender skirts.

l believe the 351 was the basic workhorse back then.

Yes it was 429 4V standard for 1972 you could get the 460 option l know l had one.

l owned a 1971 Mercury Marquis Brougham. If we r just talking the top of the line Marquis the only avaliable engine for 1971 was the 429. The basic engine was the 429 with a 2 barrel carb, thats what mine had. You could option up to the 429 4 barrel which would get u dual exhaust also. In 1972 the engine options include the 460. The Marquis does not come with the smaller optioned engines.

Brand new a fully optioned Marquis Broughman sold for around $6,000.

One great looking car, mine was a 2dr hardtop with the 429 2 barrel, smooth as silk & drove great. l now own a 2002 Grand Marquis, great car too. Wish they still had 2 dr hardtops.

The cheaper version of the Marquis is the Monterey which is the same car without all the options, no hide a way headlights or fancy trim. Those models were available with the 351w all the way up to the 429 & 460. l do not believe they offered the 302 for that car although it is available in the Galaxie is of those years.
