1995 Mercury Grand Marquis, my mechanic sayz l need a center link and a pitman arm but l looked under there and the joint were the pitman arm and center link connects is really loose and l tried to tighten but would'nt tighten should l get just get a pitman arm or what.

just replace the parts that he tells you to

The looseness is the reason for the center link and pitman arm needing to be replaced. Do the work both parts and alingnment.

Replace ONLY the pitman arm. It is common for the pitman arm to wear out on those vehicles from model years 1995 to 2002. There r NO joints on the center link to wear out. To get the part u need, go to ur local Ford dealer parts department & ask for part number F8AZ-3590-AA, which includes the pitman arm & a new crown nut. Labour should be about 1.5 hours to replace. If u want to order from fordparts.com, the price is $42.24US. Do the alignment ONLY if ur steering wheel is off center, otherwise, this particular repair should not disturb the alignment. The Pittman arm is all you really need to replace l have done this on lots of trucks and cars then drive it and you will feel the difference, hope this helps,
