hey everyone i'm just wanting to know if any thing major can happen with these, it has 83000 miles on it and it will be warranteed for 6 months, l just wanna know if l should go through with buyin it or should l make the dealer fix something right away b4 buying it, the engine sounds good and everything else looks good on it, let me know thanks

it is the same as a ford explorer,,they have their up and downs.. no known problems with the motor or tranny

l agree with Ted..they r fairly bulletproof. Check for any open recalls. l seem to recall around 2000-2001 there was some sort of issue with the camshaft tensioner on the v6 models. See if they can provide any service history on it..with 83,000 miles it would be smart to see if some of the routine items have been serviced or replaced..things like brake pads & rotors, ball joints, tie rods etc. etc. You may also want to consider having a competent professional mechanic look it over & give u their opinion..it may cost u a few dollars but it could prevent a costlier problem later in life.

Mercury Mountaineers r fairly good vehicles that r almost identical to the Explorers. If it has the FULL-TIME all-wheel-drive system, l would road test it carefully to ensure there r not any issues with it. They r a fairly simple transfer case, but u r better off with the PART-TIME system, due to the fact that four-wheel-drive is rarely needed unless u live in an area where there is snow everyday. Other than that, they r relatively good vehicles. The timing chain tensioner recall the other poster is referring to, applies only to 97 to 00 model years equipped with the 4.0L SOHC V6 engine, which l do not think any Mountaineers r equipped with anyways.
