It could be a few things. One is that the car may be overheating and it wo not start back up until the engine cools down. It is a safety sensor. Check the antifreze level. The other may be the trany does not down shift and the engine stalls because you're stopping on 2nd or 3rd gear. Once it cools down it will drop down to neutral. l hope this helps.

Sounds like a classic case of vapor lock.
Check the routing of the fuel lines. Make sure they're not running too close to hot exhaust manifolds. You might find a line has simply been bent too close to something hot and that causes the fuel to boil in the line.
You will need to bend the line away from any heat sources and possibly insulate some part of it.

well it starts up, then gets hot then turns off, it could be you dont have enough oil in the engine, inacurate temp spark plugs or anti-freeze in your cars system. The check engine program will turn your car off to protect it from farther damage.

l have a mercury sable, although your might be 2-3 years older.has happened to me many times, it is a problem with that type of car. l am sure there is a way to fix it, but i'm just letting you know you are not the only one.

The Ford ignition modules of this type and year range have been through recalls for this reason. What you have described is the exact problem of their modules overheating, shutting down, then available to restart after cooling. Best way to check is to call your local dealer and see if that recall applied to your model.

l had this issue on my merc villager. it would run for 20 minutes or so and then die. it would sputter and jerk and conk out and not restart. wait till engine cools, maybe 30 45 mins and start back up. it was the distributor gone bad. the bearings on it were shot. bought distributor for 200 bucks on ebay and put it in, problem gone.
