The Mercury Comet was produced by Mercury, a division of the Ford motor company, from 1960 through 1967. The original Comet design was based on the Ford falcon platform which was also introduced in 1960. The two sister cars shared many of the same engine, suspension, & chassis components, while the Comet had its own distinct body lines, exterior ornamentation, & interior trim. The unitized construction developed by Ford in 1935 was used on both the Comet & Falcon. The Comet was a unique car, slightly larger than the falcon with it is own identity evidenced by the many changes in through the years. The Falcon was designed as the Ford economy vehicle, while the Mercury Comet was made as a plusher performer with an easier ride for those who would pay the modest additional cost. Described by Ford, the Comet had ''big car ride, with small car handling''.

Sales were sluggish, & the total numbers r on the web page below.

l do not know the answer to your question but l have owned three Comets. My first was the initial Comet in 1960. It had a straight 6 and had a chronic oil distribution problem (as did the Ford Falcon.) My next one was a '64 404 Model with a 260 V8. Great car. My last one was a '65 totally Black Cyclone with a 289 engine. l kept it for 12 years and was offered many times to sell it. l totaled it in 1977 when a guy broadsided me and bent my frame. l love the old Comets
