My boyfriend calls me a liar when l tell him that the doors on my 2000 Mercury Cougar V6 sometimes lock by themselves without me touching them.He says that it is not possible.l have not changed anything from the dealer.Help! l am tired of being called a liar.l am intellegent enough to know that l am not dreaming or doing this myself.

Many Fords (esp Mercury, the upscale ''badge engineered'' Ford) have auto door locks that close either when u put the car in gear or when u reach a specific speed. l think the idea was if a child was sitting in the passenger seat & accidently pulled the door handle they would not fall out

(would u call that a million dollar solution to a door handle problem? no wonder Ford is going bankrupt!)

If it just started happening, maybe u bought this car second hand & it used to work, stopped working (loose wire or previous owner disconnected the wire) now it has started working again since u bought it.

You might be crazy & just dreaming it, l dunno, *lmao* but l doubt it.

Some do, some don't, and if they do have it you can stop it from locking automatically

Most New Edge Cougars (99-02) will lock after a minute or two of the car being started. This will happen whether youre driving or not. It has happened to many people who started their car to heat up then left it alone in the driveway---very inconvient!

Most Ford is from the 1990 is on that have power door locks have this feature. When the car is in gear and achieves a speed higher than l believe 3 mph the doors lock. My 2000 Mercury Mountaineer does the same thing. And l am sorry your boyfriend is an idiot who does not know anything about simple mechanics of an automobile.

If it is while driving as people have said, this is normal on some carsand is as described by the many posters on here & it is a feature called auto door locks. the owners manual actually tells u how to disable this concern of yours. (your owners manual apparently does not say how to disable so my guess is it may not have it)

If it locks while u r away from the car, We have had some issues with key fobs (those remotes) locking the cars or setting the alarms off falsely. a great test would be to let boyfirend take the remote with him to work while u babysit the car.. if the locks do not lock.. the remote is the problem

A short in the wiring (where the door closes) can also cause the doors to lock or unlock at random going down the highway (that will take a mechanic to diagnose)

where are you two from the flintstone age. Cars have had auto door locks for over forty years and now its common for most cars like Mercury Cougar is how could he doubt you about something that is common on a lot of cars maybe he is just being a jerk about it to ruffle your feathers.
