The planet was named after the messenger of the Roman gods, who was extremely swift and fast. l think the car has a similar reason.

Mercury was named after Mercury, the mythical Roman winged messenger and escort of dead souls to the underworld. It was named for the speedy Mercury because it is the fastest-moving planet.

Mercury, the element, is a semi-liquid, and moves quickly. It is also called quicksilver. Mercury, the god, is the god of speed. The planet Mercury is the closest planet to our sun, and it moves quickly, having the shortest orbit.

Mercury was named after the messenger of the gods Mercury, because of his silver winged shoes that would speed him along on his errands. He moved like quicksilver (the other name for mercury, the chemical) in his work, hence the action of mercury in application was similar and so the name.

The Mercury name comes from the ''messenger of the gods'' of Roman mythology, & during its early years, the Mercury brand was known for performance, which was briefly revived in 2003 with the Mercury Marauder.
Mercury was its own division at Ford until 1945 when it was combined with Lincoln into the Lincoln-Mercury Division, with Ford hoping the brand would be known as a ''junior Lincoln rather than an upmarket Ford. In 1949, Mercury introduced the first of its ''new look integrated bodies, at the same time that Ford & Lincoln also changed styling radically. Again in 1952, Mercury offered a further modernization in its look. In 1958, the Lincoln-Mercury Division & the ill-fated Edsel brand were joined into the Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln Division; with the demise of Edsel in 1960, it has been in the Lincoln-Mercury Division ever since.
Mercury, like the defunct Edsel, was created from scratch, rather than being a takeover of an existing company like Lincoln. Mercury is heyday was in the 1950s, when its formula of stretching & lowering existing Ford platforms was very successful. The marque has changed several times throughout its history. During the 1940s & 1950s, the make moved between as a ''gussied up'' Ford, to a ''junior Lincoln'' & even to having its own body designs. From the late 1950s, through the 1960s & early 1970s, Mercury began to distance itself from Ford & offered several different looking models such as the Turnpike Cruiser, Park Lane, Cougar & Marquis. But in the late 1970s to the early 1980s the brand was joined at the hip with Ford again & its image suffered as a result.

All of the celestial bodies were observed by the Greeks & Romans, who thought that they were ancient gods & named them accordingly. Mars was the Roman god of War, Venus was the goddess of love. Mercury was named after the messenger god, known in Greek as Hermes, & is often depicted with a winged cap & winged feet. He was known as the swiftest of the gods, & Mercury is named because it appears to move faster in the night sky than others. The Greeks & Romans noticed that some ''stars'' changed positions relative to other stars in the night sky. They knew that they were seeing something different, & thought they were gods, they really saw the planets.

many many moons ago, some old clown with long grey hair fell over in his shed & hit his head on the floor, luckly he had a old tape recorder recording his findings on a old moonshine recipe his father handed down upon him, while he was passed out on the floor he was muttering words once precieved as witchcraft, when he stood up he knocked down the shelf of raw chemicals & they mixed on the floor to create murcury, he was amused with it expansion & shrinking possibiltys. later he replayed the tape & thats where the name came from, call it fate, call it witchcraft. but fate had it he died later that month with murcury poisioning as he added it to the moonshine trying to enhance the bottle life

The messenger God. Why? Because Zeus would not allow them to use his name without signing a multimillion year contract with a signing bonus. Mercury and Jupiter were broke and would sign anything. That is why Zeus iz da MAN
