the gear shift moves fine. it goes in reverse, it goes in drive, it just will not shift from 1st to 2nd to 3rd then to overdrive.

Well, your first problem is that you're driving a 93 Mercury Villager. Your second problem is that probably your transmission is stuck. Typically, anything that has to do with gears such as drive, park, 1st, 2nd, etc it is your transmission.

there is a vacuum actuator on the rear side of the trans, check if the hose is still connected,, & if it is ,,check if there is vacuum on the hose while the engine is running,,if the hose is wet with trans oil replace the actuator,,
to find out if that is the problem,,pretend u r driving a standard trans,,on 1st gear up to 3rd,,,accelerate release gas pedal,then accelerate ,, it should shift to 2nd,,keep trying until it shift ,,because if it does not shift , ur trans is dead
