My transmission is going out on my 1991 Ford Mercury Cougar and l am curious to know what type of transmission it has so that l can price rebuild kits for it. l need as detailed information as possible. Is it AOD? Is it c-4, c-6? Etc.

It is probably a early ''aod'' or a late c-4.If it is a c-4 then the bellhousing the part that is bolted to the back of the motor will be bolted to the main transmission body and not cast as one piece.

It is an AOD for sure 100%, unless someone has installed a C4 in its place, chances of which are extremely slim, to none. A C6 would not fit in that car. 1994 model year saw the introduction of the 4.6L SOHC V8 along with the 4R70W transmission that replaced the AOD. Hope this helps.
