My after-market '98 Mercury Mystique spoiler is too heavy for the new trunk lifts l installed that were advertised for that purpose.How do l know how to rate them and purchase stronger ones?

Best bet is to measure the extended length, trunk open, then the closed length, trunk closed. Then find a very similar length within a 1/4 of an inch from another type of car with heavier trunk, hatch or hood. Yes, some car/trucks have them under the hood. l only say that because l HATE prop rods.
