What is wrong with it? Who owned it? Did they drive it to the ground? Sounds to me they did a quick fix to sell it.
Hopefully you can get it going again.

Given the lack of any details whatsoever, you really do not have a clue how many possible that question can have, do you? l have had cars with a lot more milage than your Cougar that ran just fine - there is a good possibility that it has a very minor concern. Out of gas? Battery down? Inertia switch tripped? Fuel Pump or associated circuitry? And literally dozens of other concerns... l wish you the best, and do not give up on it just because it has over a 100K on it.

Fob it off on some mark or try to trade it in on a Toyota?

You ''bought somebody is troubles.'' I've owned a couple of lemons, too. l hope you did not pay much for the heap.

Did you buy the car from a dealer or a private party?

If you bought from a private party, it was an ''as -is'' sale.

If you bought from a dealer, was there a warranty?

If so, contact the dealer for warranty repairs.

If it was an ''as-is'' sale, either from a dealer or private party, you are going to have to pay for any needed repairs.
